Erasmus Plus
Erasmus + brings the international dimension into school. The benefits it offers are not new but they have been in short supply in recent years. The UK’s re-admission to the programme highlighted at the May 2025 EU-UK Summit meeting brings with it the opportunity to state once again some of the key arguments for getting involved. Every part of the programme is explicit about offering opportunities to young people who are experiencing disadvantage by reason of their economic, educational, social or other circumstances and who might not have the opportunity to travel or otherwise participate in international work. The programme also helps to build the capacity of the education sector to meet the changing skills needs of the 21st century economy. Its core thematic priorities such as the green transition, digital innovation, social inclusion, and participation in democratic life align closely with current UK government policies. For schools pupils of all ages and abilities enjoy participation in the imaginative and creative activities that Erasmus + can offer. Whether through a simple eTwinning link or a more complex collaborative mobility project Erasmus + helps to develop valuable social skills and the ability to cooperate with others and work together with European partners on joint projects. It also brings an interest and motivation in exploring other languages, not necessarily the ones taught in school and a respect for cultural diversity. Pupils excel when working together with new peer groups and teachers find their development of literacy, numeracy and IT skills often accompanies an Erasmus + project. The Campaign
The National Campaign for Erasmus Plus aims to mobilise support for the UK’s full participation in the programme and to encourage the government to make this happen as soon as possible. The campaign brings together a broad coalition of organisations and individuals under the auspices of the European Movement UK. A steering committee, including experts from all sectors of education, coordinates the campaign, shares information and resources, and encourages participation: anyone can join the campaign and take whatever action is right for them. Alongside the report this online tool enables users to contact their MP and demonstrate the projects and funding that Erasmus + brought into their constituency 2014 -2020. Visit the online tool |
